Our Story
Our MissionButterfly Dreamz, Inc. is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that helps girls develop into women who achieve their dreams and fill the roles of leadership in this nation and world.
We equip our girls to be confident, justice-centered leaders who disrupt the status quo. Based in Newark, NJ, and Gary, IN, our programs and research aim to transform high-poverty schools and communities into nourishing spaces that cultivate the leadership and well-being of girls and all young people. Our organization is led with love and commitment by a formidable mother-daughter team—Joy, Heather, and Tiffany—alongside our talented team of youth leaders, staff, and volunteers. Our holistic approach to youth development is rooted in intergenerational community action, social justice, and L.O.V.E.
Our Founder and CEO, Joy Lindsay, launched Butterfly Dreamz in 2013, a year after she lost her younger sister, Kimberly Anyce Lindsay, to gun violence. As a Black woman with first-hand experience transforming pain into purpose, Joy is deeply committed to the needs and aspirations of girls and young people from high-poverty communities. Our Board of Directors, which includes public and private sector leaders from diverse industries, is led by Heather Lindsay, the Head of Operations for the fourth largest health insurer in the US, HCSC—and the mother of Joy, Kimberly, and Tiffany. Tiffany Davis, Esq.—Joy and Kim’s oldest sister—is an attorney and health equity advocate who serves as our Board Secretary and Legal Counsel. |
