 In partnership with the Rutgers Center for Women and Work, NJ DCF Division on Women, and other regional partners, Butterfly Dreamz, Inc. will be facilitating the ExCEL Fellowship for young women leaders, ages 16 to 23, in Northern New Jersey.
During this 7-month fellowship, youth leaders will work together to design an action project that builds community support and protection for girls. Fellows will meet on the 1st and 3rd Thursdays of every month, from 6 PM until 7:30 PM, beginning November 4th. Fellows will also participate in monthly leadership training, hosted by the Rutgers Center for Women and Work. All fellowship sessions will be conducted virtually via Zoom, and technology will be provided, as needed. Over the course of the fellowship (Nov 2021 - May 2022), you'll grow as a leader, develop lasting friendships with other women and girl leaders, and create an impactful community project! As a fellow, you'll earn a minimum of 30 community service hours by planning and implementing your project and be eligible for a $1,000 youth leadership scholarship. Note: You do not need to be a Cocoon Club member to apply for the ExCEL fellowship. If selected, you will receive a free membership.

As our team begins a new school year, we've also spent a considerable amount of time reflecting on last year—the goals we've achieved, the lessons we've learned, and the impact we've had on our community. Applications for our 2021-22 student internships are now open! We're looking for 8th grade, high school, and college students to help us build and lead our movement. All internships are paid and are 10 months long, beginning August 2021 and ending June 2022. March is the month of my grandmother's birthday, the start of spring, and the "beginning of new beginnings" as we get closer to graduations, warm weather, and a new season. Throughout this month, our girls will be preparing for growth and transition. Starting Thursday, March 11th at 5:30 PM EST, we'll be hosting weekly yoga sessions for teen girls and mentors, in partnership with I'm So Yoga Newark. Attendance is free for Cocoon Club members and non-members can donate to join. We hope to see you there!  Our AncestorsFor many of us, February is a time of reflection. Although it is not the only time we celebrate Black history, it is certainly a special time—a time of honoring the dreams and the work of our ancestors. We stand proudly and humbly on the sacrifices and commitment of those that came before us.
Earlier this week, we shared 12 Homeschool Activities That Highlight Trailblazing Black Women. In honor of our ancestors, we'll be using these activities to decide which middle and high school girls will receive our $1,000 Live Boldly Book Scholarship.  Cash in "The Cocoon"Growing up, cash was always my favorite incentive. If you have a convo with my dad, he'll tell you stories about how the kids in our family left him broke by earning A's on our report cards. :-) Well, last month I got a taste of what my dad experienced. We kicked off our Cocoon Club Cash, an incentive that awards girls cash prizes for their leadership achievements.
 DECISIONS, DECISIONS, DECISIONS...As we close out this calendar year, we're thinking about the choices we make that shape our lives and lead to our dreams becoming a reality. During our December group mentoring session, we explored our strongest and weakest decision areas, committed to actions that will improve our decision-making, and became accountability partners to each other. If you know a middle or high school girl who could use support making better decisions, invite her to join The Cocoon, an online community of women and girls working together to grow as leaders and achieve our dreams!
